چکیده

We describe a model that accounts for the complex morphology of spiral density waves raised in Saturn’s rings by the co-orbital satellites, Janus and Epimetheus. Our model may be corroborated by future Cassini observations of these time-variable wave patterns. Subject headings: planets: rings — planets and satellites: individual (Epimetheus, Janus)

Density Waves Observed by Cassini Stellar Occultations as Probes of Saturn’s

Introduction: Spiral density waves are launched in Saturn’s rings at locations of orbital resonances with nearby moons. These waves provide a means of probing fundamental properties of the ring such as mass, thickness, and collision velocities [1, 2]. These properties constrain models of the origin and evolution of Saturn’s rings. Density waves are collisionally damped, and the damping therefor...

Cassini Imaging of Saturn’s Rings II: A Wavelet Technique for Analysis of Density Waves and Other Radial Structure in the Rings

We describe a powerful signal processing method, the continuous wavelet transform, and use it to analyze radial structure in Cassini ISS images of Saturn’s rings. Wavelet analysis locally separates signal components in frequency space, causing many structures to become evident that are difficult to observe with the naked eye. Density waves, generated at resonances with saturnian satellites orbi...

The Secular Evolution of a Close Ring–Satellite System: The Excitation of Spiral Density Waves at a Nearby Gap Edge

The Lagrange planetary equations are used to study to secular evolution of a small, eccentric satellite that orbits within a narrow gap in a broad, selfgravitating planetary ring. These equations show that the satellite’s secular perturbations of the ring will excite a very long-wavelength spiral density wave that propagates away from the gap’s outer edge. The amplitude of these waves, as well ...

Numerical Simulation of Particle Separation in the Fluid Flow in a Microchannel Including Spiral and Acoustic Regions

Particulate separation has many applications in medicine, biology and industry. In this research, the separation of polystyrene particles with a diameter of 10, 20 and 30 μm in the fluid flow of a microchannel is investigated. The microchannel consists of a spiral region and a straight region under the influence of acoustic waves. In the spiral region, the particles under hydrodynamic effects u...

Advanced Dynamic Simulation of Membrane Desalination Modules Accounting for Organic Fouling

A reliable dynamic simulator (based on a sound process model) is highly desirable for optimizing the performance of individual membrane modules and of entire desalination plants. This paper reports on progress toward development of a comprehensive model of the complicated physical-chemical processes occurring in spiral wound membrane (SWM) modules, that accounts for the...
